Description

This course will examine the theme of the experiences of migrants to Australia as expressed through theatrical mediums. As well as works by migrant writers and theatre companies, course material will include works dealing with the culture, concerns and social issues relating to migrant groups and to Australian multiculturalism. The subject matter will include the theatrical activities of the first migrants of the colonial years, followed by a study of the theatrical manifestation of the social, cultural and artistic issues related to the migration patterns of the C20th. Students will consider individual playwrights and plays, as well as the work of specific theatre companies and movements. Involvement in practical workshops and a prepared performance piece is an important part of this course.
