Description

Outcomes: Students are able to (1) understand that all creative writing requires a persuasive use of craft which may involve several stages of revision; (2) deploy literary strategiesrelating to characterisation, imagery, setting, atmosphere, storyline and plot, thematic resonancewhich are common to the chosen form of writing, e.g. fiction, poetry, drama; (3) understand and know when and how to employ the principles which generally shape good writing; (4) shape personal imaginings into writing which will interest a wider readership; and (5) prepare a manuscript which meets the common requirements for presentation of a literary manuscript.

Content: This unit provides students with an understanding of creative writing concepts and techniques which seem especially pertinent to the present. This understanding is developed through an examination of the ideas of contemporary writers and through workshop discussion of students' own writing. Students may choose to write fiction or poetry or scripts or a mixture. The unit is open to all students, whether experienced creative writers or not.
