AbstractHistoryArchive Description

With Love and Fury is a series of musical settings to ten poems by Judith Wright. The sequence was conceived as both an album and a touring concert.

'The musical settings enhance the turmoil of conflict and destruction that bursts out of Wright’s words. The song cycle is dark and intense. The narrative alludes to a profound concern for the environment and our relationship with the land and its people – issues that Judith Wright felt strongly about during her life as a conservationist and an Aboriginal rights activist' (Daniela Kaleva. Australian Stage 3 May 2016).

The poems that comprise Love and Fury (in album order) are:

Notes

  • The title With Love and Fury is named after the manner in which Wright habitually signed off her letters.
  • The project had its origins in 2013 when Noonan found herself in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, at the Judith Wright Centre: 'I realised with great embarrassment that I didn’t actually know who Wright was. So I went inside, found an anthology of her poetry and read it cover to cover. Her work just blew me away.' With financial blessing from the Australia Council, Noonan set about cherrypicking the project’s composers. Her brief was simple: choose a poem by Wright and go for it' (Wikipedia).
  • The album was recorded in London.

Production Details

  • Katie Noonan and the Brodsky Quartet toured the album around Australia from 28th of April until 5th of May 2016.

    • The Judith Wright poems/songs were presented during the first half of each concert.
    • The second half comprised performances of music and songs from a diverse array of composers and songwriters, including Peter Sculthorpe, Andrew Ford, Robert Davidson, Sting, Bjork, and Elvis Costello.
