Malcolm Walker was raised in various parts of England. He left school at sixteen to engage in a variety of employment fields from clerk to door-to-door salesman. In 1973 he travelled in Europe, Asia, Central and South America and Australia. After returning briefly to England, Walker settled in Adelaide. He gained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours at Flinders University and completed a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide in 2007. He has also worked as a part-time teacher at the University of Adelaide.
