He completed his secondary schooling at Haileybury College. After working at a variety of jobs, Elliot applied to the Victorian College of the Arts in 1996 for entry into the animation course. It was at the VCA that Elliot moved into the field of claymation.
Elliot worked for the ABC in children's animation before going on to make his own short films. His first short films were Uncle (1996), Cousin (1998) and Brother (1999). In 2004, Elliot won an Oscar for his short film Harvie Krumpet.
