BiographyHistory

Based in Fitzroy (Melbourne), Melodrama Pictures is an independent film and television company founded in 1998 by producer Melanie Coombs. Prior to starting the company Coombs had undertaken a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at the Sydney University of Technology (Film Theory and Production) between 1986 and 1990, and later studied film producing at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) between 1996 and 1997.

The company has produced a variety of productions, notably Adam Elliot's Mary and Max (2009) and his Academy Award-winning Harvie Krumpet (q.v., 2003). Other works include the AFTRS short dramas Call Waiting (1996), Flying Over Mother (1997) and Break and Enter (2998); the documentaries Growing Old Disgracefully (1999), Long Shadows: Stories from a Jewish Home (2002), Grandpa's Games (2004) and The Fabric of a Dream: The Fletcher Jones Story (2007). Other productions have been: Trapped (short drama, 2000), In Your Dreams (short comedy, 2005), The Glenmoore Job (drama, 2006) and The Funk (short drama, 2008).
