BiographyHistory

Stewart Murray was a respected Elder who led an active life serving in the army, as a Justice of the Peace, a Director of the Aborigines Advancement League, and founding the Aboriginal Funeral Service. He also assisted in the establishment of the Aboriginal Legal Service and was a member of the Aboriginal Liaison Unit.

Stewart Murray served in New Guinea and contracted malaria at a later stage of his deployment. He was a good friend of Alick Jackomos and upon his return from service in the army he fought for equality. Murray was awarded with the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal, the Australia Service Medal, and the OAM for services to Aboriginal welfare.
