Anne-Marie Schwirtlich migrated to Australia in the early 1970s. She finished her education in Sydney New South Wales and began her career in the Australian Public Service in 1978. She worked at the Australian War Memorial and the National Archives of Australia, acting in the position of Director-General of the National Archives of Australia from 2000-2003. In 2003 she was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the State Library of Victoria and in March 2011 Director-General of the National Library of Australia.
