McCaughey was art critic for The Age (Melbourne, Victoria), the Head of Visual Arts at Monash University, Victoria and a high profile director of the National Gallery of Victoria. He left Australia in the late 1980s to take up the directorship of Wadsworth Athaneum in Connecticut, USA and, later, the Centre for British Art at Yale University, Connecticut.
