Described as a 'poet, philosopher and humanist', Miles Little is better known for his work as a leading surgeon and his subsequent contribution to medical literature.

Holding the status of Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney, Little has led a distinguished career with a special interest in contemporary medical ethics and philosophy. The Founding Director of the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine, which was established at the University of Sydney in 1995, Little has sought 'to practise medicine with compassion, empathy and ethical and moral awareness'. He has been the recipient of numerous medals and prizes, with his work being recognised both in Australia and overseas.

Little has written extensively in the field of medical literature, having produced more than 250 published works that range from journal articles to books and cover such topics as medical ethics and bioethics, vascular and gastrointestinal disease, abdominal surgery, liver trauma and amputations.

He is the author of one selection of poetry, Round Trip (1977). His poems have also appeared in Quadrant, Southerly, Poetry Australia, Meanjin, and The Australian.
