After receiving his BA from Sydney University, Ivor Indyk completed his PhD at University College, London. He taught for four years at the University of Geneva in the late 1970s before returning to Australia. After a short appointment at the University of Newcastle, Indyk accepted a lectureship at Sydney University where continues to teach in 2004.

In addition to literary criticism and book reviews, Indyk has been involved in publishing since 1989. He was co-editor of Southerly (1989-1993) and founded the literary magazine Heat in 1996. Fourteen issues of Heat were produced, but the magazine struggled to remain viable. In 2001, Indyk accepted a half-time appointment with the University of Newcastle to develop a new series of Heat and explore new kinds of literary publishing. Ivor is the founder of Giramondo, the press developed during this appointment, has published the works of a number of authors, including Antigone Kefala and Brian Castro.
