BiographyHistory

The son of William Allen and brother of Carleton Kemp AllenCd), after graduating M. A. at Sydney University, L. H. Allen took his Ph.D. degree at Leipzig. He lectured at Sydney Teachers' College and was later Professor of English at the Royal Military College Duntroon and lecturer in English at Canberra University College. He published four books of verse and provided an introduction to the 1952 edition of Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life. Allen's publications also include several works on creative writing and literary criticism. His German language doctoral dissertation on Shelley was published in Leipzig in 1907. Among his translations is "Three Plays by Friedrich Hebbel" in Dent's Everyman's Library (1914).
