Dominique Hecq has published as a poet, novelist and translator and has written two short plays. She is also a co-author of Female Sexuality: The Early Psychoanalytic Controversies. Hecq grew up in the French-speaking part of Belgium and attended the University of Liege, where she studied Germanic Philology and gained a Master of Arts degree in literary translation. She travelled to Australia in 1985 to read Australian Literature at LaTrobe University, settled in Melbourne and became a lecturer at LaTrobe University. In 1998, she received the Melbourne Fringe Festival Award for Outstanding Writing and Spoken Word Performance for her story 'Out of Bounds'. In 2000, her short story titled 'On How to Make a Midsummer Poem' was awarded first prize in the Woorilla Australian Summer Short Story Competition. On three occasions, Hecq has received the award for most outstanding poetry at the Annual Daffodil Day Arts Awards.
