BiographyHistory

Christopher Lee has lectured in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Southern Queensland and has published in the field of nineteenth century Australian literature. Lee's PhD, awarded by the Universtity of Queensland, dealt with 'Madness and Society'.

Stella's illness is shown to resemble female Neurasthenia, a nervous condition identified in the 1860s and believed to arise from the pressures which social conditions place on the individual. The woman's illness, impacting on the domestic situation, then placed the woman in a position of 'power'.
