Sidgwick and Jackson Limited was founded in London by Frank Sidgwick (who had been a partner in the Shakespeare Head Press), Robert Cameron Jackson, and Ronald Brunlees McKerrow. The firm specialised in the publication of modern poetry and drama. It was the first publisher of the work of Rupert Brooke, whose popularity during and immediately after the First World War contributed significantly to the firm's viability. From the 1950s the firm developed a more general list, which included science fiction.

In 1970 Sidgwick and Jackson became a subsidiary of Fortes Holdings Limited, and in 1986 was purchased by Macmillan Limited. It became an imprint of Pan-Macmillan, where it publishes high profile biographies, contemporary commercial non-fiction, and some military history titles in association with the Imperial War Museum.
