BiographyHistory

Film producer, director and screenwriter.

Yoram Gross studied music at Krakow University, Poland, and also worked as an assistant on several Polish features films. In 1950 he emigrated to Israel, where he worked in both the advertising and film industries for almost two decades. One of the films he worked on during his time in Israel was Joseph the Dreamer (1960).

Gross came to Australia in the late 1960s with his Israeli wife Sandra. The couple initially began producing documentaries and occasional short animation films, and in 1975 published The First Animated Step (a survey of the history of animation). A film was later made based on the book and marketed to high schools as a means of introducing students to the basics of animation.

In 1977 Gross, through the newly formed Yoram Gross Film Studios, produced Dot and the Kangaroo which was the second animated feature film to be made in Australia (and the first to return a profit). The film's success led to a number of other films, including quite a few based on the adventures of Dot.

Gross has also produced and directed television series for children. One of the more popular, based on the character Blinky Bill, later spawned a series of children's books.
