Daughter of the well-known and controversial author Dulcie Deamer (q.v.), Goldie was educated at Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta, New South Wales, the University of Sydney (MA, 1943) and the Sorbonne in Paris. After working in Fribourg, Switzerland, from 1946 to 1952, she moved to Rome, where she held positions at the Vatican, being the first woman ever to hold an official post of authority in the Roman Curia. She was also Professor in the Pastoral Institute of the Lateran University, 1977-1986. Goldie was awarded the Order of Australia in 1990 and has received honorary doctorates from the College of St Thomas, St Paul, Minnesota (1988) and the Australian Catholic Universirty (1999).
