Amitava Ray received a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Melbourne in 1978. He was awarded a Young Writer's Fellowship from the Australian Literature Board in 1977 and wrote part of Baby Tiger at this time. Also a speaker of Bengali, he has written fiction and poetry including Blue ponies : poems 1984-1994 (1994) and Flesh Wounds : poems 1995-1998, published after his return to India. Ray also made translations and, from 1985 to 1990, worked as an editor of the journal Praxis published in Delhi, India. In the mid-1990s he was living in Santiniketan, India.
