BiographyHistory

Ray Mooney studied drama at the Victorian College of the Arts, and writing at the Australian Film and Television School. He completed a degree in Social Science at the Western Australian Institute of Technology and Physical Education at Melbourne University. He worked as a PE instructor for the Collingwood Football Club 1976-1980, and has also been a fitness adviser, barman, bar manager, builder, theatre director and dramaturg. He began his writing career while serving an eight-year term 'at Her Majesty's Pleasure', during which time he was sent to the dreaded H Division for being spokesman during a riot, an experience which influenced his play Every Night, Every Night. His first play, A Blue Freckle, was initially performed by the Players Anonymous Theatre Group at Pentridge Prison. He has established two theatre companies (ZAP Community Youth Theatre and Governor's Pleasure) and has lectured in creative writing and performance at Holmesglen TAFE and the Film and Television School of the Victorian College of the Arts.
