BiographyHistory

Richard Murphet studied at Monash University and obtained an MA in Drama from the University of Toronto. He has been an actor, director and playwright and has worked with theatres such as the Pram Factory, the Universal, Anthill, the Performance Space, the Nimrod and theatres overseas in New York, the Netherlands, Montreal and Toronto.

In 1993 he received a grant from the Literature Board of the Australia Council to write a play based on the 1950s movie The Three Faces of Eve, entitled 'Dolores in the Department Store', which was workshopped by Handspan Theatre in 1998. He has continued to focus on the creation and production of new theatrical works.

As an academic he has lectured and taught at Monash University, the University of New South Wales, Deakin University, Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Utrecht. He received, in 1996, a National Teaching Fellowship for excellence in teaching. He has held the position of Post Graduate Coordinator/Head of Theatre Making in the School of Drama at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Murphet has compiled Pipe dreaming : Case Study (1990) for a course presented by the Deakin University School of Education and Humanities Open Campus Programme.
