BiographyHistory

According to the firm's administrative history (Guide to Australian Literary Manuscripts), the Australian Book Company, a London agency of Angus & Robertson, was established in 1913. However, evidence from Robert Scot Skirving's Love and Longitude (1901) indicates an association with Angus and Robertson as early as 1901. In 1901, the company was located at 38 West Smithfield, London; in 1920, it was located at 16 Farringdon Avenue, London. The agency was operated by Henry George. In 1937 The Australian Book Company was bought by Angus & Robertson and established, in 1938, under the direction of Mr Spencer who was succeeded by Hector Macquarrie.
