'Sydney PEN, based in Sydney Australia, is one of three Australian PEN Centres, which are each part of an international network of 141 PEN centres ... Sydney PEN conducts campaigns and holds events supporting literature, fostering international understanding and defending freedom of expression. Sydney PEN seeks to increase recognition of PEN's values (as expressed in its Charter), in the writing and reading community and wants to make the voice of PEN heard both at home and broad ... Sydney PEN, the first PEN centre in Australia, was founded in 1931 by Ethel Turner, Mary Gilmore, and Dorothea Mackellar. The tradition of distinguished Australian writers being members of PEN continues to this day. Our Life Members include Mona Brand, Ruby Langford Ginibi, Mabel Lee, David Malouf, Frank Moorhouse, Vincent Serventy and Roberta Sykes.'
