BiographyHistory

Les Murray escaped from Stalinist Hungary with his family and migrated to Australia as an eleven-year-old child. The family landed in Darwin, and eventually moved to Wagga Wagga.

A devotee of soccer, he eventually became the face of The World Game on SBS Television. He began working with SBs on its launch in 1980, and, as his obituary on SBS noted, 'His role went far beyond being a football commentator. The growth, popularity and success of football in Australia today is absolutely a reflection of his passion and advocacy for the game that he loved.' He covered eight World Cups before his retirement in 2014, and was inducted into the FFA Football Hall of Fame.
