William McGarvie, brother of the journalist and clergyman John McGarvie, had briefly worked on the staff of the Glasgow Herald before emigrating to New South Wales in 1828. In Sydney he became the manager of the 'Australian Stationery Warehouse' in Lower George Street, run by Robert Howe in conjunction with the Sydney Gazette. In 1831, McGarvie and two other Howe employees - Frederick Stokes and Ward Stephens - began a new paper, the Sydney Herald, which later changed its name to the Sydney Morning Herald. McGarvie is thought to have suggested the name owing to his experience with the Glasgow Herald. McGarvie's tenure with the Sydney Herald was brief, however: he sold his stake in the paper to the other partners after just five issues. After leaving the Herald he returned to the management of the Australian Stationery Warehouse.
