Notes

  • On the financial crash which hit the Australian colonies in the early 1840s following the collapse in wool prices on the English market. At the time sheep became worthless for their wool, and were instead boiled down for tallow, which although not as lucrative as wool in boom times, at least enabled cash strapped debtors and creditors to cut their losses.
