Henry Savery, Quintus Servinton,
single work
Argyle challenges Cecil Hadgraft's idea (based on date, setting and residence of author) that Quintus Servinton is the first Australian novel, by pointing to the influence of Walter Scott and the author's lack of engagement with a geographical or political notion of Australia.
-
Charles Rowcroft, Tales of the Colonies and The Bushranger of Van Diemen's Land,
single work
Argyle discusses Rowcroft's better novels, demonstrating the author's treatment of colonisation, gender relations and his portrayal of aborigines. The discussion of these issues complements or supplements Argyle's larger concern with the influence of Walter Scott and the appearance of the Byronic hero in Australian literarture.

thesis
'In searching for the origins of the Australian ethos it is tempting to regard convicts and "old hands" as the seedbed of Australian political democracy as well as part of the humus that nourished mateship and egalitarianism. While, as Russel Ward documents in The Australian Legend, many Australian social attitudes data back to convict days, the origin of Australian political democracy followed urban English rather than American or Australian frontier patterns.'
