Harris provides background details to Ern Malley's life (derived from a letter from Malley's sister, Ethel Malley.) Harris then comments on each of the 'seven aphoristic paragraphs' that constitute the 'Preface and Statement' to Ern Malley's poems. The paragraphs were originally in the form of two pages, handwritten by Malley, and accompanying the poems that comprise The Darkening Ecliptic.
