Manifold argues that Paterson's poetry expresses a philosophy (nearer to anarchism than anything else) that is deeply rooted in his experience and that of his contemporaries. Manifold demonstrates how the law, the economy and the city are all presented negatively in Paterson's poetry. An awareness of this is important, Manifold argues, because those ideas have become a part of the national temperament.
