AbstractHistoryArchive Description
In this work, Bennett draws upon an idea expounded by Rosemary Dobson and David Campbell who, in Seven Russian Poets, published 'imitations', rather than 'translations' of the poems of seven Russian poets - Osip Mandelstam, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, Olga Berggolts, Bella Akhmadulina, Natalia Gorbanevskaia, and Yunna Morits. Here, Bennett uses the poetry of David Campbell, Dorothy Auchterlonie, Zora Cross and Christopher Brennan as her muse.
Notes
-
Author Note: 'Poetry translations have always fascinated me. And - how much of the individual 'poet' is left after working within two or more languages? Thus, The Hermit was born - and that was due to the next question: what would the chosen four poets be writing and saying about themselves today if they were still in 'the flesh?' To find out I donned my skin of space and joined them. Stef Bennett, 1998.'
