'Dorothy Porter's fourth poetry collection is an exhilarating ride through passions found, imagined and richly lived.

'From a modern, petrol-headed Carmen and Don José to pairs of polar explorers and silent twins, an intersection of birds and asylums, reflections on vanished love and new desire, Driving Too Fast bursts with vitality, a horsepower rhythm and language that turns on a dime.'

y separately published work icon Akhenaten Dorothy Porter , St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 1992 Z248289 1992 single work novel (taught in 6 units)

'Akhenaten was a fascinating, shadowy figure in Egyptian history – archaeologists have discovered attempts to eradicate all traces of his brief reign, but enough remains to tell a remarkable story of incest, heresy, androgyny and a massive cult of personality.

'Like Albert Camus celebrated Caligula, Dorothy Porter's Akhenaten is an attractive warped megalomaniac who attempted to construct an heretical religion around one Sun God, with himself at the centre.

'Akhenaten is a novel in verse that captures the obsessive, erotic nature of its central figure. It is a towering achievement.'

y separately published work icon Parts of Us Thomas Shapcott , St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2010 Z1669494 2010 selected work poetry 'Parts of Us holds in balance a quiet maturity with a vital energy. Ranging from sonnet sequences to long lyrical meditations, dramatic monologues to more confessional works, these poems are imbued with verve, curiosity and elegant inquiry. The collection is marked by an almost self-elegiac strain, an unflinching imagining of on''s own death, and a sense too of love fading, which serves as a brave and powerful corrective to the idealisation of some love poetry written by men about women. In the light of these themes, the lively "Adelaide Lunch Sonnets" acquire additional weight and resonance.' (From the publisher's website.) St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2010

y separately published work icon Surface to Air Jaya Savige , St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2011 Z1802846 2011 selected work poetry 'Surface to Air, evolving over a period of five years from 2006 to 2011, is an impressive follow-up to Savige's extremely successful debut Latecomers. It charts Jaya's various poetic influences during this period, which have included David Malouf, Peter Porter, Les Murray and Giuseppe Ungaretti.

'While many of the poems in latecomers, concerned the history and landscape of Bribie Island, where Savige grew up, this collection is about leaving the island and as such, it signals a departure from Latecomers.

'The title, Surface to Air, conveys the central themes of the collection, which include: the archaeological exposure of history, both personal and cultural, to the present; the struggle for literal inspiration, (a title of one of the poems) in contemporary life, with issues ranging from consumerism to personal grievance and loss; the ubiquity of violence, and the relationship between actual violence and the simulacrum of violence and war (connoted by the phrase "surface-to-air missile"); among others. It is also an invitation to be mindful of the surface effects of language.' (From the publisher's website.)

y separately published work icon The World Last Night M. T. C. Cronin , St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2012 Z1910552 2012 selected work poetry 'With unmatched greenness the plot of earth holding the body stands out on the hillside.

Most of the day's life is drawn there toward what's vanished into emptiness.

the end of the world never changes - the last words from The Worlds Last Night, with no dot at the end. Yet the world of the end changes with every printed or erased line. There are no borders of inherited pain between the verses of this book, even when its sharp edge can let blood from your lines of life, Books are cursed to be archaeological artifacts only when they are about the ground - away from the worms of oblivion and the waiting hands of the clock. MTC Cronin's proems are soft as a stone that becomes sand in an hourglass, silent as a darkness in an empty suitcase. Her purified world of long-distance silence clear the dust from the human's distrust in all yesterdays, deaths and gods. Look at stone / if you wish to read the language of wind. Dreamy words carved in the air! Nikola Madzirov.' (Publisher's blurb)

'Exploring body and place in ways that are expansive, intimate and playful, Viva the Real celebrates resilience and continuity in everyday life. Jones’ poems offer us a strong, vital voice, charged with her effortlessly rhythmic and resonant lyricism. This collection is both haunted and visceral, and will resonate long after reading.' y separately published work icon A Kinder Sea Felicity Plunkett , St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2020 18610460 2020 selected work poetry 'A Kinder Sea explores the sea as sanctuary, hoard and repository. It is composed of sequences – love letters, elegies, narratives and odes – it looks outwards from the intimate to take in others' lives and voices, remaking form and craft. Felicity Plunkett's remarkable poems balance wrack and loss with vitality, resilience and beauty.' (Publication summary) St Lucia : University of Queensland Press , 2020
