When Antigone arrives in Sydney from Greece to meet Telis, the man to whom she is making an arranged marriage, she is rejected for being too old. Although she finds sympathy from Telis's older brother Manolis, Antigone begins to withdraw into memories of her youth and ealier romances, while longing desperately for control over her own destiny.

The story is told from the perspective of a migrant who has newly arrived in Australia, and also explores the Greek community in Sydney at that time. In this respect, it offers an alternative picture of migrant life to the comedic narratives of films such as They're a Weird Mob (q.v.).

  • First produced in 1963 under the title Throw Away Your Harmonica, Pepino.

    Produced by Sidetrack Performance Group as a bi-lingual production under the title The Promised Woman from March 2000 to June 2001 as part of their 21st Anniversary Season. Productions in Sydney (at various venues) and in Canberra at the Street Theatre 6 - 10 March 2001 as part of the National Multicultural Festival. Season directed by Don Mamouney.

    'This collection includes: The Well (1960) by Jack McKinney, a rustic comedy in the Steele Rudd tradition set in Queensland; Burst of Summer (1960) by Oriel Gray is a realist play dealing with racial prejudice and is based on the brief success of the Aboriginal actress Ngarla Kunoth, who played Jedda in the Chauvel film; The Season at Sarsaparilla (1962), Patrick White's poetic satire examining the inevitable cycle of birth, copulation and death; White called it a 'charade of suburbia'; and The Promised Woman by Theodore Patrikareas which had its first stage production in Sydney in 1963 and is possibly the first play by a post-war immigrant staged in Australia. The play portrays migrants adapting to their new country and finding new identities and was adapted for the screen in 1974. (1 act, 2 women)' (Publication summary)
