The dilemma of a young woman who remarries thinking her first husband killed in the Napoleonic Wars. He returns and sues for bigamy.

  • First published as a serial in The Mofussilite (India) from October - December in 1862.
  • The issue of The Mofussilite for the 26 December 1862 is not in the set in the India Office in London. Crittenden has 'ghost written' the conclusion. (Introduction, p.iii)
  • This novel seems to have as its basis the three act play of the same name by John Baldwin Buckstone first produced in 1833.
