AbstractHistoryArchive Description

In an invasive, paternalistic, federal public policy environment for Indigenous communities, this book provides an in-depth account of one person's experiences as a 'Stolen Generation' Aboriginal Australian...The book presents a rare autobiographical journaling of the psychological impact of institutionalisation on an Indigenous woman, her search for family, community and identity, her psychological breakdown and her personal reconstruction through telling her story in a supportive educational environment. - from back cover

Notes

  • Part A of this work is titled 'My Story : Extracts From My Journal'. Part B is title 'Understanding My Story : My Autoethnographic Research'.
  • Dedication: To two very precious gifts that I love so deeply, Kim and Karl, who have blessed me, their mother, with the unconditional love that money just cannot buy. Also to Rob, my son-in-law, and my two grannies, Kayla Maree and Natasha Lee, with my love and thanks.
  • Dedication: To all Aboriginal children who are undertaking their own journey and struggles to find who they belong to and where they fit in a 'black' or 'white' Australia.
  • Dedication: To a mother who gave me birth, but who could never be my mother due to the government policy of removing fair-skinned children from their families for assimilation.

'This is a book that surprised me in the way that it gripped my attention. After some decades of Aboriginal biography and autobiography, many of which are concerned with removal fromfamily, one could be excused for thinking that there is not much that has not already been told. While every individual’s story is important and deeply personal to them and their kin, this book isinnovative and I venture to say groundbreaking in terms of the methodological approach of thewriter Mary Terszak. It is also very good story telling by an engaging and attractive personality.' (Introduction)
