'The official inside story from the cast and exclusive untold secrets from one of the most beloved Australian series in television history

'Epic shiv fights. Shocking deaths. Lethal hotshots. Betrayals so brutal they send fans into meltdown. This is Wentworth Correctional Centre, where tough women rule and where even tougher women are made. Where undying love and fierce friendships are forged, and loyalties tested - or burned to the ground.

'Over almost a decade of searing, emotional storylines and spectacular power struggles like the rise of the Top Dog or horrifying twists like a steam press attack, Wentworth has sealed its spot in history as FOXTEL's highest rating and most successful locally produced original drama and one of Australia's all-time favourites.

'To celebrate this gritty, critically acclaimed series, On File brings you never before told stories and in-depth access to the celebrated actors and producers of this favourite, much-loved and enduring television series.

'This official, exclusive collection dives deep into the core of Wentworth's love 'em or hate 'em main characters - from abused housewife and mother Bea Smith, and the cold, calculating and terrifying Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson, to bitterly forsaken undercover cop turned prisoner Rita Conners - unearthing funny and poignant reflections, never released backstories and behind-the-scenes revelations from when the cameras stopped rolling, as told by the high profile stars.

'Wentworth has left an indelible mark on its fans in Australia and those around the world, where it has screened in more than 170 countries and been adapted multiple times, setting it apart from other Australian dramas and earning an impressive catalogue of awards and nominations.' (Publication summary)

'A breakout success from the beginning, Fox’s prison drama returns for a new season with an old face, a botched heist and all the noirish style for which it is rightly becoming famous On its arrival seven years ago, Wentworth — an adaptation of the famous, if creaky, Reg Grundy-produced Prisoner, the jail soapie that was such a hit in the early 1980s — came with low, if not derisive, expectations. The campy, overacted original might have run for 692 episodes but surely this daggy piece of TV history had no place in the emerging new world of high-end HBO-style production, in an era when TV was becoming the new cinema?' Writing the Powerful Female World of Wentworth Craig Batty , 2019 single work column
— Appears in: The Conversation , 11 July 2019;

'One of the major considerations when creating an ongoing television series is its “story world”, made up by its place, people, themes, style and tone. Central to this world is the setting, known in television writing as the “hub” or “precinct”, which serves the need for constant generation of characters and storylines.' (Introduction)

As Wentworth Slips Quietly Onto the ABC, the Series Still Asks Tough Questions about Gender Politics Sue Turnbull , 2018 single work column
— Appears in: The Conversation , 18 April 2018;

'In early March, the ABC issued a press release announcing that the “multi-award-winning Australian drama Wentworth” would make its free to air television debut on April 12. “This ground-breaking and much acclaimed Foxtel drama”, it went on, has not only been enormously popular “worldwide”, but also garnered a swag of nominations and awards, including one from the Monte Carlo TV festival. Somehow overseas recognition still seems to count for so much more when it comes to assessing the value and impact of Australian screen productions.'
