AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'What if they'd invented rock 'n roll way back in the 19th century? What if it could take over the world and change the course of history? In the slums of Brummingham, the outcast gangs are making a new kind of music, with pounding rhythms and wild guitars. Astor Vance has been trained in refined classical music. But when her life plummets from riches to rags, the only way she can survive is to play the music the slum gangs want.

Charismatic Verrol, once her servant, is now her partner in crime...and he could be so much more if only he'd come clean about his mysterious past... ' (Publisher's blurb)

Notes

  • Steampunk note: This story contains the classic 'what if?' premise of steampunk that asks what would have happened if certain very modern innovations had been made in the Victorian era rather than more recently. In a 2014 interview, Harland noted that the novel is

gothic cum Victoriana rather than full-on steampunk – or it’s the special category of steampunk that American publishers call ‘gaslight romance’. Less emphasis on imaginary Steam Age hardware, more emphasis on emotions, characters and relationships. But Song of the Slums still needs its setting in Steam Age society. The very premise of the novel – what would happen if rock ‘n roll was invented 100 years before Elvis Presley? – depends on it.

  • According to the author's website, the novel is set in a different part of the Worldshaker universe.
