'This contest was instituted in 1990 [by the British Haiku Society,] using an initial donation from James W Hackett, a well-known pioneer in the field of haiku writing. It has been held annually ever since ... Haiku must be original, in English, not previously published nor under consideration for publication or entered in any other competition.'
