History

As part of its contribution to the Australian Bicentenary, the Australian Academy of the Humanities, with the support of Esso Australia Ltd, offered an award for substantial and important contributions to the understanding of the history of culture in Australia. An award was given to the author of the work which the Academy considered made the best and most substantial contribution to the understanding of the history of culture in Australia, and which would be published or produced not more than 24 months preceding the closing date. The award was open to any work published or produced anywhere in the world.
