Australia Popular Culture (AUST11-105)
Semester 1 / 2013

Description

This subject examines key ideas underpinning representations of Australia through popular cultural mediums such as tourism campaigns, popular music, television, cinema, sport, food and fashion. Australian Popular Culture considers whether there is such a thing as a distinctively Australian culture, and the inclusions and exclusions embedded in popular ideas about Australia. It explores the relationship between mainstream popular cultures and everyday cultures. It aims to provide the knowledge and analytical tools to understand that everyday popular culture is deeply embedded with competing ideas about Australia, and thus to enable students to critically analyse Australian popular culture for themselves.
