Poems Beyond the Page (CRWR 2010)
Semester 1 / 2013

Description

This course introduces students to new techniques and practices of making and producing poetry that is for publication or performance beyond the traditional published book format. It focuses on poetry as an adaptable form, as performative and oral as well as a visual, a seen art. With the rise of both new technologies of publishing and archiving, as well as a revival, since the 1950s, of the performed poem, poets have been at the forefront of finding new forms for their writing practice and reaching new reading communities. Students will undertake a series of exercises designed to develop skills in sound and visual poetry, new media poetry as well as small-scale and collaborative publishing modes. They will be required to work collaboratively on a class project. A large part of the course will involve writing for new media resulting in the production of a poetry webpage.
