Recent Australian literature and film reflects not just an Anglo-Saxon or Celtic heritage but a multicultural, multivocal society with differences in the ways Australians see themselves or traditional Australian concerns such as the relationship between the human and the landscape. This unit examines some of the distinct Indigenous, Asian–Australian and other migrant voices which have contributed to a redefinition of Australian literature and film.

Students are able to (1) identify key issues and moments in the Australian literary and film traditions; (2) engage critically with these issues and moments through the analysis of specific texts; (3) achieve a greater understanding of the multicultural and multivocal nature of contemporary Australia and Australian artistic practices; and (4) express their responses with clarity and purpose in oral and written form.
