This subject centres on a wide variety of verse forms (with accompanying metres, word games and devices) both in the student’s own work and through looking at poems in English (and in translation) from the Sixteenth Century to the present day. As well, there will be class work involving group villanelles & group sestinas and work involving heteronyms whereby students invent a poet and his/her life together with their poems. Each class will centre on examples from the more traditional to the more avant-garde. All class members are expected to attempt a variety of these verse forms and as well construct an annotated anthology including poems from these particular verse forms, though not those poems discussed in class.
