BiographyHistory

Benjamin Duterrau began his working life as an apprentice engraver. He went on to exhibit his own paintings in London before emigrating to Van Diemen's Land in 1832. Duterrau established a studio in Hobart Town and became well known for his portrayals of Indigenous people including a life-size portrait of Wooreddy. Duterrau's paintings of the Hobart area are also valuable for their topographical detail.
