— Appears in: The Bulletin , 26 May vol. 21 no. 1058 1900; (p. 2) This mock obituary targets Meston's origins as obscure, and suggests that the cause of death was 'verbal prolepsis': 'No matter how large the subject he could find a colossal world to overshadow it.' The article also makes fun of Meston's athleticism, crocodile-shooting, and Parliamentary career: 'He was a skilled whip and drove alligators in double harness through the columns of the press...he damned the roaring torrent [of the Barron Falls] with an ejaculation.' In November 1896, when William McIlwraith's partnership with S. W. Hartley ended, John Blair became joint proprietor of The Morning Bulletin with McIlwraith. When Blair died, the Dunn family, headed by Andrew Dunn (Snr) bought a controlling interest in the paper. Dunn installed his eldest son, Andrew Dunn (Jnr) as editor, and third son William Dunn as chief-of-staff. After WWII, Dunn's second son, James McIntyre Dunn became business manager.

The Mackay Mercury was established in April 1866 by William Oswald Hodgkinson, with financial backing from Charles Keeley. In March 1867 Hodgkinson sold the paper to Edward Wright, a former printer.
