'The sonnet is a classic lyric form that has beguiled and perplexed poets for over seven hundred years. In this, her thirteenth collection, Jordie Albiston re-invents the sonnet structure, trading meter for syllabics, and employing fifteen lines in lieu of the traditional fourteen. Themes of destruction and loss, hope and wonder, and the pressing fate of an unstable world, are coded like enduring questions into the machinery of these extraordinary poems.

'Albiston's relationship with the sonnet has prevailed since her earliest work, most notably the highly celebrated and award-winning the sonnet according to 'm'.'

1 3 y separately published work icon Element : The Atomic Weight and Radius of Love Jordie Albiston , Glebe : Puncher and Wattmann , 2020 18367147 2020 selected work poetry

'Using chemistry as an indexing trope, Jordie Albiston tabulates the human predicament of love: its foundations and fundamentals; its configuration of emotions; its recurring properties; and its inherent assumption of many as yet unknown elements to occur.  These poems range across space and time, all the while adhering to the formal constraints of atomic theory.  The states and structures of being are scrutinised according to love's capacity for passion and fissure, blessing and debt, and a compound body of two is progressively mapped onto the page.

'This remarkable collection sees Albiston's longstanding conversation with mathematics and poetic form advance into the realm of science.  With characteristic invention, orchestration and play, she discovers and describes the universal vastness and everyday physics of love.'

1 1 y separately published work icon Cyprus Poems Jordie Albiston , Port Adelaide : Picaro Press , 2018 15327231 2018 selected work poetry

'Jordie Albiston has published many poetry collections and a handbook on poetic form. Jordie works within formal boundaries: traditional, experimental or self-imposed. She seeks the musical cadence while endeavouring to exact a mathematical sense of existence. Often she utilises historical sources from which to wrest a kind of documentary cataloguing: other times she refers to an internal witness of experience. The poems here were commissioned by Anna Messariti (Much Ado) for a music-theatre piece, Aphrodite’s Tears. Jordie’s work has won many awards, including the Mary Gilmore Award and the 2010 NSW Premier’s Prize. She lives in Melbourne.'  (Publication summary)

1 2 y separately published work icon Warlines Jordie Albiston , Melbourne : Hybrid , 2018 14408470 2018 selected work poetry

'A collection of poems redacted from letters written by Victorian soldiers during WWI.  These poems were researched and written under a State Library of Victoria Creative Fellowship (2016-17).  The collection is a kind of literary mosaic of individual experiences on the way to, from, or at the Front, with correspondents ranging from the Officer, Chaplain and Flying Ace to the humble (and often semi-literate) Private, Gunner and Sapper.  Each poem is titled for its particular soldier and is based on one or more missives penned by that individual.'  (Publication summary)

1 3 y separately published work icon Euclid's Dog : 100 Algorithmic Poems Jordie Albiston , Melbourne : GloriaSMH , 2017 11413833 2017 selected work poetry

'This is not a book of high mathematics: rather, an attempt to migrate some of the innate robustness, austerity and elegance of Euclidean thought into the realm of poetic structure. Albiston's formal experiments do not function as mere theory, dry equation or games, but authentic poetic events, at the same time harmoniously familiar, and strange' (Introduction)
