For Elizabeth Nettlefold, the chance to nurse its strangely ill meant renewed purpose in life. For Dr Knowles, brilliant physician and town drunk, it meant the revival of a romantic dream. For some it meant a murder plan gone awry, and for Bonaparte, it meant one of the toughest cases of his career. ' (Publication summary)
1 2 y separately published work icon Aces and Kings L. W. Sutherland , Norman Ellison , Sydney : Angus and Robertson , 1935 Z1320193 1935 single work autobiography war literature The author of this exceptionally interesting book was a pilot in 67 Squadron (Australian) R.F.C., in Palestine during the war. He describes the Squadron, its life and adventures. No more interesting chapters in the literature of the war have been published than those here, on Lawrence of Arabia, Ross Smith and the "kings of Men" (in which he pays tribute to the chivalry of Felmy and other German airmen). No passage from war literature is more tragic than the author's chapter "Nine Miles of Dead", in which he describes the slaughter of two Turkish Armies by the Royal Flying Corps. Aces and Kings is an unaffected history of the Australian "Warbirds" and mingles gallant adventure, humourous incident, and vivid description. A confederation of planets and mysterious aliens that threaten it. An Away Team investigating a spaceship showing no signs of life. A cloaking device using sophisticated enemy technology. Sounds like an episode of Star Trek, doesn't it? The only thing is Vandals of the Void was published 35 years before the first original Star Trek episode was shown. Or is it more a precursor to Star Wars? Witness fiction's first interplanetary space war. Where did these crested invaders come from? And why were they threatening to bring destruction to the three civilised planets? In a breathless world of space pirates and disintegrator rays, Interplanetary Guard Jack Sanders discovers the unexpected during a voyage to Mars: romance with the impressive, alluring Jansca Dirka...and a war of the worlds. Vandals of the Void is space opera on a grand scale
