She is responding to suggestions by Benjamin Markovits (New York Times Book Review, 6 March 2005) that the prize should be opened up to American writers. Young contends that writers such as Peter Carey and Thomas Keneally 'would never have reached a world audience without the blessing of the Booker judges.'
