Note: Author note: 'Ludwig Leichhardt, born in Prussia, became an Australian explorer and botanist. In 1844-5 he succeeded in crossing the continent from south to north. In 1846 he attempted to cross from east to west, but this expedition was a complete failure. Two years later, whilst attempting another trans-continental journey, he disappeared' (p.249).
