When northern Italy was conquered by Napoleon, Giuseppe Bussandri refused to be conscripted into the army. In defiance, he - and all the men of Scipion - cut off their fingers, all except the thumbs and littlest fingers. For this, Giuseppe was executed; his family became known as 'Musette', meaning 'cutter'.
