History

The National Film and Sound Archive Ken G Hall Film Preservation Award (1995-2012) acknowledged individuals, groups of individuals or corporations for their outstanding contribution to the art of the moving image and its preservation. Initiated in 1995, the award ran for 15 years and was inspired by Ken G Hall AO, OBE, one of Australia’s leading film directors and producers, who passionately advocated for cinema and its preservation.

  • 'The National Film and Sound Archive's (NFSA's) Film Preservation Award is presented to acknowledge and encourage individuals, groups of individuals or corporations for their outstanding contribution to the cause of moving image preservation. It is awarded to Australian or international candidates where there is a significant link between their work and its impact or relationship to the Australian film industry...

    'The award was established by the NFSA in 1995 in tribute to producer/director Ken G Hall. Candidates are identified and selected by the NFSA Board. The award is usually, but not necessarily, presented annually.'

Phillip Noyce For his outstanding contribution to the art of film and to the cause of film preservation, particularly through the authentic treatment of archival footage in his 1978 film Newsfront, his long-term commitment to the preservation of his works through the National Film and Sound Archive, and his championing of the NFSA's Kodak/Atlab Cinema Collection.

Graham Shirley In recognition of his contribution to Australian film preservation. Graham is one of Australia's most distinguished audiovisual archivists and historians.
