AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Jean Martin was a pioneer of sociology, inventing a version of the discipline that was uniquely suited to Australia in the post-war period. Jean Isobel Martin (1923–79) made herself a sociologist before the discipline was established in Australia. Regarded as a founder of Australian sociology, her writing, teaching and policy helped shape Australia in the period of economic growth and social development that followed World War II. The Martin Presence is a biography that examines her life and her work across the concerns of the time and explores her far-reaching influence on the social sciences in Australia.' Works about this Work

[Review Essay] The Martin Presence: Jean Martin and the Making of the Social Sciences in Australia. Shurlee Swain , 2017 single work essay
— Appears in: Australian Journal of Politics & History , March vol. 63 no. 1 2017; (p. 149-150)
'Jean Martin is acknowledged as a pioneer of the study of sociology in Australia, yet her legacy is often more apparent in the work of colleagues and students for whom she was a formative influence rather than in her published research. This book, produced by three leading sociologists whose careers she helped foster, is an attempt to remedy that gap, drawing on her extensive archive of unpublished as well as published research, and interviews with many of her associates, to reconstruct her intellectual journey as part of the wider story of the development of the discipline.'
